Split the Difference

On a FB post a person discovered that his Grandfather was in the 502nd Parachute Regiment (101st Airborne Division).  He found the information on the website Paratrooper Research Team (PRT).

On the Paratrooper Research Team website they had George F. Cruz in Company I in the 502nd.  Went to find the Morning Report and send it ahead to the family.

It turns out the Paratrooper Research Team made a mistake.  PRT had George F. Cruz in Company I.  That isn’t correct as George F. Cruz was in Headquarters Company 3rd Battalion 502nd.  George F. Cruz ASN 38070915 was wounded on 6 June and never came back to the 502nd due to the severity of his wounds.

George Cruz NMI (No Middle Initial) ASN 38203877 was in Company I 502nd and was wounded 10 June 1944.  This Cruz came back at the end of August 1944 and was wounded again 9 January 1945.  He came back to Company I March of 1945.

I can see where a mistake like this can happen.  You have two George Cruz’s both from Texas and both in the third battalion of the 502nd Parachute Regiment.  The difference is one has a middle name and one didn’t.

They have him nicknamed “Big Cruz”.  I can see why, the only mistake is they have him in Company I not Headquarters Company 3rd Battalion.  You can also look at the size difference for the two soldiers as well;

ASN             Name                      Height          Weight

38203877    CRUZ GEORGE     67               131

38070915    CRUZ GEORGE F  69               145

As always there is documentation to show the differences between the two soldiers who both were wounded in Normandy, France.

(The title of this article name was because George F. was wounded on the 6th and George NMI was wounded on the 10th and today is the 8th after all)
