Stub and Duke

You are probably wondering what in the heck is a Stub and Duke.  Well they were two friends who happen to have jumped into Normandy, France 6 June 1944.

Stub was Corporal Clayton Storeby (ASN 20753795) and his buddy Duke was Private Harold F. Conway (ASN 36104298).  They were in Company C 326th Airborne Engineer Battalion (Combat) 101st Airborne Division.

Duke’s grandson Kevin Barkman reached out after stumbling across my site.  Kevin was looking for information about his Grandfather.  He’d already found an account about what his grandfather had done in Normandy.

After a little poking it turns out there was a bit of information about Duke.  There were Morning Reports, account from George Koskimaki’s (Coach K) D-Day with the Screaming Eagles book and Medical Records for Duke.

Stub and Duke were walking down a road the morning of 6 June when Duke was hit in the thigh.  A detailed account is here from Coach K’s book.

Here are the Morning Reports showing the day Duke was wounded, when he came back into Company C and his furlough in at the end of July.

Duke was wounded again 28 December 1944 and came back into Company C 1 February 1945 His medical records are here as well for both of his wounds.

As an aside a letter from Frank Halloran mentioned something I never knew.  Company C for the 326th was a Parachute Company.  Company A and Company B had one Platoon were a Parachute and two Platoons were Glider Riders.

The 82nd Airborne Engineer Battalion had a different breakdown.  Company B and Company C were Parachute and Company A were Glider Riders.

Hopefully we all learn something new every day.
